The DNA of the virus that causes monkeypox may often be found in various samples from affected individuals, including saliva and sperm. This was the finding of a research conducted by the Barcelona Institute of Global Health (ISGlobal) and published in the most recent edition of the scientific journal Eurosurveillance, which focuses on surveillance, epidemiology, and the prevention and control of infectious illnesses.
This research indicates that sexual fluids and saliva may potentially play a role in the spread of the illness, while contact with infected lesions is the primary mode of transmission. Which would explain the fast increase in the number of cases throughout the globe.

High viral loads were identified in each of the 12 samples of patients' saliva and skin lesions. 11 of 12 rectal swabs – sterile swabs used to gather samples for exams – contained DNA, as did 10 of 12 nasopharyngeal swabs, 7 of 9 semen, 9 of 12 urine, and 8 of 12 stool.
Aida Peiró, a researcher at ISGlobal and the study's lead author, explained that previous studies had demonstrated the occasional presence of viral DNA in some samples and in some patients. However, the current study demonstrates that viral DNA is frequently present in various biological fluids, particularly saliva, during the acute phase of the disease and up to 16 days after the onset of symptoms in a patient.
The participants in the study were heterosexual males with an average age of 38. Four individuals were HIV-positive, although their HIV viral level was undetectable. All participants reported sexual activity with up to ten partners in the preceding month.
The authors of the research note that the existence of viral DNA in a sample does not necessarily indicate that it is an infectious agent, despite the finding.
"Our results contribute to a better understanding of a likely complex transmission conundrum and highlight other immediate research areas, such as the infectivity of body fluids, the frequency of secondary and asymptomatic cases, and the impact of social and behavioral factors on viral transmission," the researchers wrote in their publication.
